Pressure that has to discharge

A storm is not a random event. It is the resolution of a pressure differential that has been building, often for some time, out of sight. That is the structural fact dreams use, and it explains why storm dreams so rarely read as arbitrary misfortune.

The approaching storm. Among the most reported configurations and the most useful. Darkening sky, dropping pressure, the quality of light before rain, animals or people preparing. This corresponds to waking situations the dreamer can feel building and has not yet named — a conflict not yet opened, a decision approaching, an accumulation that is going to break.

The storm itself. Being caught in one shifts the reading to the discharge in progress. What matters interpretively is shelter: whether the dreamer has any, whether it holds, and whether they are exposed by choice or by circumstance.

Shelter that fails. Roofs that leak, windows that break, buildings that will not keep the weather out. These belong to the house vocabulary as much as to this one — the structure of the self proving inadequate to what is arriving.

After the storm. Under-reported and consistently significant. Dreams that continue past the weather into clear air, damage assessment, or unnatural stillness tend to accompany the period after a crisis has passed, when the dreamer is establishing what survived.

Storms and anger
